This week's question comes from Bethe in Fort Worth, Texas, the museum capital of the Southwest:
Hi Bethe,
You’re a smart traveler to think about trip insurance, especially for such a costly vacation! When you’re booking your travels, there are two types of insurance plans to consider: one covers your trip and the other covers you.
A travel protection plan covers the cost of your travel if you miss your flight or have to cancel your trip for reasons that are covered under the plan. On Travelocity, you can add a protection plan when you purchase flights only or vacation packages, but don’t forget to read the fine print! Every plan varies for domestic and international travel, but typical coverage includes cancellation because of illness, injury or inclement weather. And, please note that you have to add the plan when you book your travel. You can't go back and add it later!
When you travel internationally, it’s important to check with your healthcare provider to find out what is covered should you have a medical emergency while on your trip. If your international coverage under your current plan doesn’t meet your needs, you may consider purchasing a medical travel insurance plan.
It’s up to you to decide if it’s worth it to purchase an insurance plan. I usually add a travel protection plan for a trip that I consider a splurge, but I don’t include insurance on, say, a flight home to Dallas. If you decide that you do indeed need travel insurance, Travel Guard is a reputable company for both medical travel insurance and trip protection plans.
Have fun in Europe!
Jenn
