Have you heard the news? The economy stinks. I know, you're shocked (shocked!). But despite what some reports would have you believe, people are still traveling. Maybe not at the same rates or with the same budget as in past years, but they're still going. After all, what would summer be without vacation? Like a day without sunshine? Or like a gnome without a garden?
Travelocity has just released a list of ten summer hotspots for 2009. Think of it as a "most improved," rather than a "most popular" list. These ten domestic destinations are seeing a rise in popularity despite one-third of travelers cutting back on their summer vacation budgets. Good news in tourism alert! The local economies of these destinations should benefit from their improved rankings.
Travelocity's 10 Summer Hotspots:
Minneapolis / St. Paul
Salt Lake City
San Francisco
Las Vegas
Seattle
Chicago
Washington, D.C.
Portland (OR)
San Diego
Boston

Woah, check that out! Who would have thought Salt Lake would make the list! (Awesome outdoorsy stuff, people, you should seriously google "Southern Utah Red Rock" pics and then rearrange all your travel plans to make a stop here.)

Wow! I've actually only visited five of these places, but the other five were already high on my to-see list. Looks like I've got some summer weekends to plan...

San Diego is definitely a top spot because of it's amazing weather, the Zoo, Seaworld, Legoland! Did I mention the beach and the fun nightlife downtown? It's got everything you need in a vacation. I'm surprised that Minneapolis is on there! I'll have to look into it and maybe plan my next trip :)

What about Miami, I'm going this summer and I have not been for at least 10 years, I heard it's one of the best destinations, next time you should include it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB8bAH0Jea0

I never would have known that Chicago was a summer hotspot, I thought it was nicknamed the "Windy City"! :)
If you're looking for a summer hotspot in Europe Malaga is well worth a look. It's an ancient port set against the azure backdrop of the Mediterranean sea. Beach life, has made it one of the most popular destinations on Spain's Costa Del Sol.

What about Hawaii, well they have nice beaches.

Thai beach (c) Rex strength of the euro keeps us from some of our most popular destinations this summer. Prague, Cork and Paphos all suffered large declines in the British book summer break - so what new "hot spots" should be eliminated under the slack?

I love that someone commenting didn't omit Wisconsin Dells as a great vacation hot spot. And yes we do have a great share of beautiful women in the Dells. Florida we're coming for ya. LOL.
