Like many New Yorkers, I don't own a car. This complicates weekend trips, of course, as I am forced to rent one.
I also rarely carry cash. I typically have about $2 on me. Why carry cash when I can use my debit card for practically everything? Unfortunately though you can't use your debit card at the toll booth. Until now! Sort of. From Jaunted, here's the headline that caught my eye: Fear No More Change-less Rental Car Drivers.
The Highway Toll Administration recently introduced the TravelPass mail-order program that provides electronic tolling devices, or tags, to travelers who book car rentals through Travelocity.
Here's how it works:
1. Book your car rental on Travelocity
2. Choose the ‘Add a Toll Device' option
3. Check your mailbox for your TravelPass electronic toll tag
4. Use your TravelPass electronic toll tag
5. At the end of your trip, send the TravelPass tag back in the provided, postage-paid return envelope
Your credit card will be charged $1.99 per day and for any toll expenses incurred. When you figure I have to pay at least $3 to take money out of a bodega ATM to have cash to cross the bridge, seems like a deal to me.

Why didn't I know about this sooner?!?!
We were LOST in Orlando, and "ran" a 50 cent toll - because we only had 45 cents change! (Hundreds of dollars - no coins!) Nothing like being lost, at 1am, and not having change for the un-manned toll booths in a strange state!

How can I avoid the expensive tolls when driving through Florida?
I'm moving from Oklahoma to Florida.
A friend told me he paid at least $30 worth of tolls when driving through Florida to Miami.
Is there an expressway or interstate route?

I just received a violation notice for $45.80 for not paying an .80 toll in CHI. There were no attendants, only machines capable of accepting change only. Since I had only bills, I crumbled a doller bill and threw it into the basket. What else could I do? This system is as corrupt as the politicians they elected.

Because of fraud my friend. sure carrying your cash around is risky if you are mugged, but what about the danger of using a credit card in a cyber cafe whilst surfing the web on a laptop or netbook? Hackers often lurk at these places waiting for an opportunity to mine data from your pc via an open wi-fi network.
So it's not just carrying cash that is dangerous :)

I really don't carry cash whenever I travel because there are lots of bad elements out there. I only carry credit card or debit card. I think it is more safer and more convenient.

I think this is great for anyone on vacation who doesn't want to be hassled with having to deal with tolls in unfamiliar locations.
