13 Urban Dictionary Words for Travelers

I’m a dorky writer who enjoys things like grammar and linguistics. Annoyingly, I correct the poor language of others in my head; I won’t respond to online dating requests if their profiles aren’t grammatically correct; and I even edit my text messages before I send.

But, I have to admit that I’ve developed a guilty pleasure that would make most writing traditionalists hurl: I’m obsessed with Urban Dictionary‘s Word of the Day. I suppose this is where my love of language and fixation on pop culture intertwine.

Occasionally, a travel-related word will pop up; I smile and file it away in my brain to be used later for amusement. Since that memory file of Urban Dictionary travel words is growing, I thought I’d share a few of my favorites with those who may also find them entertaining. In no particular order:

How do I find Super Bowl travel deals?

Dear Editors,

I don’t have tickets to the game, but I want to go to Dallas during the Super Bowl and watch it from there. Any tricks to finding a good deal? Also, any recommendations on where to stay? I don’t know Dallas very well, and I see there are a lot of hotels in surrounding areas.

Hi Brian,

You came to the right place! I’m a Dallas native and can give you some local tips on where to stay, but first, I want to set your expectations in terms of deals. The cost to travel to a big event such as the Super Bowl is going to be set at a premium. A Travelocity data report shows average airfare to Dallas for Super Bowl weekend is $326 for a roundtrip ticket; hotel rates average $188 per night; and car rental rates average $226 for the weekend. These are higher than typical averages for the Dallas area, so keep those Super Bowl price points in mind as you search for your travel deal.

Are there Overeaters Anonymous meetings on cruise ships?

Dear Editors,

Are there Overeaters Anonymous meetings on cruise ships?

Hi Bill,

Considering cruise ships have gluttonous amounts of food, Overeaters Anonymous meetings should certainly be offered onboard! You are going to have to channel your inner health nut during the cruise, though, because these meetings aren’t available.

That said, cruise ships do cater to vacationers’ health needs in other ways. If you have special dietary needs, you can let the cruise line know when you book, and they’ll make sure your needs are met. If calories are your main concern, even the buffets have healthy options. One thing that always helps me on vacation is writing down everything I eat. It keeps you in check!

Get Inspired: Follow these Spring Break Planning Steps

Let me guess…the kids just started the new semester yet they’re already talking about their next big break? Well, so are we; it’s go time for booking that spring break trip.

If you haven’t already made the purchase, you should at least be on the lookout for travel deals and spring promotions. To get you started with the planning process (if your household is a democracy, that is!), get the entire family involved to make your trip planning a real part of the journey. Here’s how:

Call a family meeting. The topic of discussion: vacation! When everyone is invested in the planning process, it makes the experience of travel more fun. Talk with your kids about what types of places they would like to visit, or ask if they’ve learned about any interesting cities in school.
