I never put "airport lines" on my Christmas list, and yet there they are every year, looming like an inexorable holiday fruitcake.

Well, this year--no more! I'm taking it upon myself to educate you in the ways of the speedy security line, and with the busiest travel time of the year looming large, I hope you'll take it upon yourself to learn. It beats dashing to your gate with your sneakers half-laced--speaking of which:

SHOES: If it ties, laces, buckles, or wraps, forget it. There may be a runway, but the airport's no catwalk--and the easier it is to take your shoes on and off, the better. This goes equally for riveted work boots and red Nancy Drew pumps.

LAPTOPS: Leave them at home, or opt for an X-ray-friendly laptop bag. They're inexpensive, good-looking, and you won't hold up the line while you fumble with your hardware.

JEWELRY: Remember that clever runway/catwalk remark I made? It applies here, too. Unless you're stepping directly off the tarmac and into a Vogue shoot, you can stow the silver. Wood, plastic, and Mardi Gras beads are less likely to set off alarms. The same can't be said for your holiday sweater.

LAYERS: Baby, it's cold outside this season, but unbundling can take ages if you're over-wrapped. Leave enough extra space in your carry-on for discarded winter gear, and dress down before you queue up.

LIQUIDS: It's nice not to have to use dad's dandruff shampoo, and far be it from me to tell you not to bring your toiletries. Toss them in checked baggage when you can. If a carry-on is your only option, make sure you follow the TSA 3-1-1: three ounces, one quart, one bag.

POCKETS: Empty them before you get to the front of the line. You can leave the lint.

BELTS: Elastic waists aren't fashionable, but they're great for two things--massive holiday dinners and getting through security lines. If you have to wear a belt, loosen it early so you can whip it off when the time's right.

PHONES: If you're fortunate enough to own a smart phone, you can pre-empt all of this by choosing the fastest queue. Check out security line wait times on Travelocity's mobile or iPhone site and pick a winner. Oh--and don't leave your phone in your pocket when you're doing the metal detector thing. You'll beep.

Got any tips of your own? Post them!
