baggage claim

Ever wonder where that lost luggage of yours ended up? If you flew through PHX, it may be at this creepy couple's house. They were arrested this week for stealing more than 1,000 bags from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. I got a call from channel 12 News in Phoenix to talk about how travelers can prevent this from happening to them. Even though it's tough to protect a bag that isn't in your possession, there are a few things you can do to make sure someone else doesn't claim your luggage.

  • Be prompt and vigilant. Luggage rarely beats its passengers to the carousel, so go straight to baggage claim after you deplane to pick up your bags.
  • Don't check your bags. The best way to avoid having your bags lost or stolen is to pack a carry-on. Plus, you'll save money on baggage fees!
  • Choose luggage that stands out. A thief may be more likely to snag a black bag that blends with the crowd. If you go with black, attach an identifier such as a bright ribbon or conspicuous luggage tag.
  • Use a TSA-approved lock. Ok, so it's not exactly a Brink's security system, but a locked bag could be a deterrent.

Above all else, don't check your valuables! If it's irreplaceable, expensive or sentimental, keep it on you. This includes items such as jewelry, cameras and cash as well as personal identification such as social security numbers. Sure, it sucks to have your undies stolen, but at least you can pick up a clean pair at Target.
