I have many celeb sightings to my name, including Meryl Streep (getting into a taxi in New York), Michelle Obama (walking down the street towards me in San Francisco, flanked by Secret Service men who were escorting her into an Italian restaurant), and Dexter Holland from The Offspring (schmoozing it up in the Met Bar in London.) Okay, wait, maybe that last one doesn't really count. Dexter who?
But the curious thing is that I've never seen anyone famous while traveling. Sure, I've heard everyone else's stories: they walked onto a plane and there was Ben Affleck in Business Class! They went to get their luggage at the baggage carousel, and whoops! Bumped into Goldie Hawn! As for me, however, the closest I've come was getting stuck behind a very slow Mercedes SUV while leaving LAX, which my brother swears contained one Paris Hilton. (Because she was driving a fancy car five miles an hour, oblivious to the honking of other drivers? I'm not sure. Though he was convinced.)
What about you: have you ever seen anyone famous while traveling? And airport celeb stories to share? Bonus points if they were smaller than you thought they'd be. And nicer.

Yes!! I've seen "Dr. House" on one of my trips to New York! I was to shy to ask him for an autograph...now I regret it..

Bob Hope, Charles Barkley, and Monica Lewinski.
Not all at once, although that would have been pretty awesome.

The Olsen Twins at LAX going thru customs. They were trying to be incognito with sunglasses, big hats and an entourage, but we were indoors at 9pm. So, they were fairly obvious. I decided that they really need to eat a hamburger.

I've never run in to anyone in an airport (I'd be hard-pressed to recognize most celebs), but my friend saw Famke Janssen at SFO.

I was on a flight with REM from Madrid to Berlin - walked beside them picking up luggage in the Tegel terminal. As we were walking into the terminal I saw Mike Mills and said to my friend "I wonder if anyone ever tells that guy he looks like Mike Mills." At the same time she was pulling on my sleeve because Michael Stipe was walking next to her!
Also on a flight with John Kerry from Zurich to London (he was at the summit in Davos). As I was walking to my seat in economy, I had to ask him to move out of the aisle (in First Class) so we could pass.
On a flight with Rupert Grint and Lily Cole from London to Berlin (they were heading to the Berlin Film Festival, not together mind you).

I'm usually oblivious to celebrities! I mean, they NEVER look as good as they do in the magazines. Several times while in NYC my friends have spotted stars walking past us, but I never seem to spot them myself...EXCEPT this one time in Vancouver. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner pulled up to my hotel (Sutton Place) with baby Violet. I was totally star struck!

Thirty years ago, I met Cher and her daughter and her dance team at a hotel pool in Reno, Nevada. We were traveling and ended up staying there one night. Cher was very charming and spoke with my father and uncle in the hot tub.
I was in Las Vegas this year and walked by talk show host Larry King at the Wynn hotel. Larry is remarkably short.
I met Paul Newman in the late 70's at Sears Point Race Track. He asked my brother and me about school. Very nice b/c we didn't try to speak to him but he walked up to us while we were checking out his race car.
A family friend is a pilot and used to fly Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman for a private charter company when they were married. He said that Tom was very friendly and she was very quiet.
Seems like you see famous people more in California at restaurants than airports, but probably that's just me.

I saw Wolf Blitzer at Reagan International in DC, for some reason we were the only parties still waiting for our luggage at baggage claim. He looked great - distinguished and charming, his wife looked gaudy - too much gold, animal print, bleach blonde, tight pants going on for my taste. She was a bit cougarific and aged herself by trying to look younger.
This past December as we were boarding a flight to Belize in Houston, the hubs noticed that Dan Rather was sitting in 1st class as we ambled back to coach. Sure enough, when we landed he was in baggage claim, dressed like he was ready for a safari. It appeared that he was travelling with a bunch of family. Bill wanted to approach him for an autograph but i told him to let him enjoy his vacation.
About 9 years ago we were in Park City,Utah for some skiing and it just so happened to coincide with the Sundance film festival. We, as well as every other person, had to wait about 45 mins to get seated for breakfast in a cafe on the main strip... some director came in and did the whole "Don't you know who I am??!!" routine when he was told of the wait time. I wish I knew who it was b/c he had everyone in that place laughing as he was told, it didn't matter who he was, the wait was 45 minutes. He left while the entire cafe enjoyed an uproarious laugh at his expense!

I was on the same flight as Geraldo Rivera from Miami to LA, and he looked just like himself, although a bit shorter... His mustache was as big as it looks on TV though!

I met John Cusack when I was in NYC once, just walking down the street. He was very kind, and friendly, and so much taller than I imagined he would be. And even cuter in person, though I wouldn't have thought that possible.
I was also at a casino once having dinner and to this DAY I swear Samuel Jackson was at the table next to us. If not, there is a dead ringer for him wandering around Indian casinos eating excellent seafood.

Bernard Hill (King Theoden in LOTR)is an occasional customer in my shop in Norfolk and a bloody nice bloke he is too! Also as a sort of win double, I recently flogged a printer to Louis de Bernières the author. He's a really nice bloke too!

Erik Estrada and Buster Poindexter. (I once crashed my car while listening to a Buster Poindexter song, so his presence on the plane made me a little nervous.) But, Ponch!

I met a former prime minister of some Asian country but I don't recall what's his name. That was on a trip to Indonesia many years ago.

I once saw Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey in the food court at Chicago O'Hare. This was back when they were still together. The only noteworthy thing I remember about it was that she had a huge gold purse, and everyone around me was on their cell phone texting, e-mailing or calling anyone they could think of that they saw someone famous.

Way back in 1994 I was on a plane from Denver to L.A. with Brad Pitt. This was after Thelma and Louise (I loved that movie!) but I think before Legends of the Fall. No one else seemed to recognize him, but he was still trying to be low profile with his sunglasses and all. But it was him. And yeah, he is that gorgeous.

I probably have an advantage since I'm in uniform.
I met my Senator Claire McCaskill over the weekend.
Mickey Roarke and I posed together in a B727 galley years ago. I gave the picture to my then girlfriend with the caption "From Two Studs" and I think she's still laughing at me.
I met the Red Hot Chili Peppers in First Class from Paris to Munich. They were all sitting on the floor in front of their seats and it freaked out my flight attendants. I saw them perform later that night at The Firehouse. Awesome show. This was in the 1990's, whatever year they performed Under the Bridge on SNL.
I once walked Daryl Hannah find baggage claim at JFK. This goes back about 20 years ago.
Elizabeth Berkley stopped in the cockpit once before takeoff then kept me up chatting during my two hours of crew rest from JFK to Barcelona. It was worth losing the sleep.
I had Payton Manning on a flight to Honolulu for the Pro Bowl. The Colts lost in the playoffs that year and he didn't look like he wanted to be social so we all politely left him alone. I'm 6'4" tall and felt dwarfed by him.
I had Wallace Shawn on a flight into Hamburg right after the Princess Bride came out. all I could think to say was "Inconceivable." I'm sure he's heard that ad nauseum.
Lloyd from Entourage was on my flight into ORD. I wanted to say a few Ari Gold lines but decided it's better to keep my job :-)
Cheers! MLB
