In late 2008, Japanese man Hiroshi Nohara lived in the Mexico City airport for over three months straight. Unlike the man portrayed by Tom Hanks in the movie, The Terminal, this man was free to leave at any time—yet he didn’t. When asked why he was still there, Nohara said he didn’t know. They couldn’t kick him out, because his Visa was still valid. Despite what seemed to be very apparent hygiene problems, strangers would buy him meals and he got into the good graces of many of the food court vendors, who would also feed him from time to time. Then, suddenly, he picked up and left. I guess someone invited him home for sleep and a bath.

Next time you’re in London trying to figure out the tube map, imagine what it’d be like to try to cover all the underground stations of the entire system in the fastest time possible. Currently, the record is held by a male-female duo who managed to meet the challenge in just 17 hours, 30 minutes, and 51 seconds. Many have tried, but failed to abide by the strict contest rules: you can only get from place to place using your feet or public transportation. No cheating by getting to the stations by car or taxi. New York has its own version of the challenge, which I’ve heard takes more like 24 to 25 hours.

It’s the modern-day version of the Odyssey, or at least Karl Bushby thinks so. Fourteen years ago, he decided he would take it upon himself to see what it was like to travel on foot from the bottom of South American back to his home country of England unassisted by any sort of transport. He did some planning and saw it would be 36,000 miles. Piece of cake, right? According to his website, after making it as far as a small town in central Russia, he got bumped back to Mexico due to a disheartening Visa situation. He’s now hanging in Melanque, Mexico, hoping to get more funding or a commercial sponsor so he can finally return home.

Some people cope with their fear of flying with breathing exercises. Others, with prescription medication. Mark Malkoff decided on a rather unusual approach to deal with his fear—he decided to confront it head on, by agreeing to spend a month straight on AirTran in a bid for the Guinness World Record for most flights in a month. And he did it, too. He hit 12 flights on his busiest days, although most days were just five or six flights for a total of 135 flight segments (beating out the previous record of 125). During this time, he changed all his flights by way of the tarmac so he literally didn’t set foot out of the airplane or the runway for all of that time. During his journeys, he took advantage of the free wi-fi and tweeted his adventures.

When a certain Connecticut native and southpaw named Matt first decided to film himself doing his favorite dance while he traveled, he had no idea what a phenomena he was about to create. He posted his video online, and people liked his videos so much he got sponsored to do his dance around the world by Stride gum. In 2006, he took a six-month trip through 39 continents on all seven continents—he danced in every single one of them. Then, in 2007, he traveled again, and this time got people to join him in his dances. Watch one of his videos, and I defy you to not get all warm and fuzzy about travel, and the world.
