I’m a sucker for spokesanimals (I’m not sure there’s anyone who loves the Frontier Airlines crew as much as I do), so I was excited to hear that the gorillas of Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park have started Tweeting and Facebooking their way to conservation funds. (Those opposable thumbs sure have come in handy!)
Check out the new Friend a Gorilla website and its Twitter and Facebook pages; the team behind them will be adding new features (like geo-tracking gorilla families) soon.
I’ve been following these gorillas’ rise in popularity as a tourist attraction for a few years and have browsed the many photos of friends who have made the trek to see them, but following the gorillas online these past few days has really endeared them to me. Luckily (or perhaps dangerously, if you’re an impulse-travel-shopper), there are links from the site to learn how to reserve your own trekking permit for the park.
But why not think about going? It is the Year of the Gorilla, after all--and I’d say it’s always a good time to support tourism in the Pearl of Africa.

Talk about a very viral way to get buzz going for a service. Social media definitely unleashes the imagination of ad / marketing people everywhere.
