I've been talking about getting your passport for a few years now, but this time I really mean it.  The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative has had a rolling ID ramp-up requiring passports for people who are entering the United States from Mexico, the Caribbean, or Canada.  Up until now it only mattered for people who were traveling by air.  But as of June 1st passports, NOT JUST A DRIVERS LICENCSE, will be required for entry back into the US.

The reason this is an important change is that this year many people opting for a more affordable way to travel will be exploring abroad by car or by sea.  Even the Transportation Secretary has said he expects people to drive instead of flying.  Canada is a relative bargain these days with the current exchange rate.  Great deals for cheap vacations can be found on Mexican and Caribbean cruises.  But the last thing you want to do is get stuck trying to get home.

If you're looking for a way to save consider getting the cheaper, more limited, passport card as opposed to the more expensive traditional passport.  The passport card is only good for border crossings by land or sea from the Caribbean, Mexico, Bermuda, or Canada but it only costs $45 for adults, and $20 if you already have a valid passport.
