2008: The Wave…of American Flavors (Disney’s Contemporary Resort)

In 2008, The Wave…of American Flavors opened in Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Beneath the brushed steel arch “tunnel” into The Wave, you will find American-style cooking blended with world flavors. Learn more about this casual restaurant that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The Wave…of American Flavors is Disney’s foray into the realm of a sustainable, environmentally-friendly and market-inspired approach to casual dining. Located on the ground floor of Disney’s Contemporary Resort to the right of the lobby check-in area, The Wave is a great choice for a family to escape the heat and crowds of nearby Magic Kingdom and enjoy a quiet, delicious meal.

Service at The Wave has always been impeccable in my experiences.  Servers carefully explain the philosophy behind the menu, the specials, the “sustainable fish of the day” and recommendations based on what types of things you typically enjoy. It’s also a wonderful place to try some old favorites prepared in a new way. Personally, I love the seared scallop appetizer, which is served with local corn. The desserts aren’t to be missed either, with items named for their taste and feel, such as “Crisp and Crunchy.” At the same time, old standards like milkshakes are available too.

The kids menu features some old favorites like cheese pizza, baked chicken strips or a cheeseburger, but with the twist of sweet potato fries on the side. It’s a great place to sneak in some healthy choices without the kids noticing. When visiting with little ones, I always judge a restaurant by whether or not they serve bread and butter at the table. The Wave has some wonderful fresh-baked bread and it’s always a winning option for quieting cranky kids before their meals arrive!

When visiting without children, the bar is a lovely choice and offers the full menu. In addition, all of the renowned wines served at The Wave are cork-free, for environmental reasons, which I thought was fascinating when the server told my family on our first visit. Be sure to check out the fun cocktail choices as well.

If there is a convention or other event taking place at the nearby Contemporary convention center, The Wave may have some wait times, but other than that, we’ve never had a problem walking in. The Wave is a great alternative to counter-service choices or the pricier signature dining found within the Walt Disney World parks and resorts. Not to mention the atmosphere itself is pretty cool. The lighting, furniture and decor are all in keeping with “The Wave” name and make for a calming escape.
